Media Controls
There is a disturbing new technology we should all be concerned about just patented by Philips. Thought you could watch TV and skip the commercials? Well think again. The US Patent office issued a patent to Philips which would allow broadcasters of Digital TV, the new FCC mandated standard, to force consumers to either pay to skip commercials or be forced to watch them. No changing channels during a program.
The uproar over this issue has been so hot on the net that a recent Google Search for “Philips anti-commercial skip” returned 56,000 results! People do not want to be controlled. If you are reading content on our site, then most likely you are concerned about your rights and are an informed citizen of this planet, as you should be.
When I did some more searching I found this quote from Philips:
“it had no plans to use the technology in any of its products.”
That’s all well and good, but why patent a technology which has the potential to take more of our rights away? Well you know why. Money. It always comes down to money. The almighty dollar (Euro, Yen, etc.) makes companies do strange things. Just insert the monetary unit of choice or your credit card… we’ll be happy to drain your life’s savings all for some advertising dollars.
