The Section 108 Study Group, Gowers Review April 5, 2006
The Section 108 Study Group convened by the Library of Congress is accepting written comments through April 17. From their web site,
“The purpose of the Section 108 Study Group is to conduct a reexamination of the exceptions and limitations applicable to libraries and archives under the Copyright Act, specifically in light of the changes wrought by digital media.”
You can read the public notice in the Federal Register in text or pdf format and you can find a list of registered participants in Los Angeles and Washington, DC Public Roundtables here (pdf).. You can read more about it at Ars and /.
I also noticed a commenter of the slashdot story mention the UK has a related Gowers Review of Intellectual Property Call for Evidence. Submissions to the call for evidence should be sent to the Gowers Review of Intellectual Property by Friday 21 April 2006. The Gowers Review web site claims,
“While it has been suggested that the present UK system strikes broadly the right balance between consumers and rights-holders, it also appears that there are a variety of practical issues with the existing framework.”
I wonder how many people in the UK feel the balance. You can read the Covering Letter and Issues Paper of the call for evidence at the Gowers Review web site.
