Free downloads 5, South by Southwest March 18, 2006

From their about page “the 2006 SXSW Music and Media Conference showcases hundreds of musical acts from around the globe on over fifty stages in downtown Austin…” and you don’t have to go there to enjoy the music. Presently, they have released two torrent files to download with almost 1000 free mp3’s. I have been listening to these two collections for over a week and the music is great. I’ve found several new favorites to add to my play list.

While you are there you might want to check out some of the podcasts (mp3) of the interactive panels. Burnie Burns of Red-vs-Blue fame gave an interesting keynote covering some history of the Internet and the threat posed by ISP’s interest in charging content providers to both have AND use their Internet connections. Bruce Sterling’s presentation “The State of the World” is very Sterling’ish and you can’t miss “The Future of Darknets: Can Hollywood See the Light?”. There was very little discussion on the topic of darknet’s after one of the panelists introduced herself as a representative from the MPAA. From there on it was mostly good but slightly hostile questions from angry members of the audience. Happy listening!
